Since Home Affairs launched its bank partnership on 9 March 2026, more than 500,000 South Africans have applied for a Smart ID through participating banks, and by early August there were 372 participating branches. Home Affairs has also launched an online tool that shows your nearest participating branch, and says more branches are on the way. There are two routes: apply on eHomeAffairs first and then check in at the Home Affairs counter inside the bank, or apply directly at the bank’s Smart ID self-service terminal where it is offered. Either way, you collect the card at the same branch with your current ID (or temporary ID) and the SMS you receive. The minister has urged people to replace the fraud-prone green barcoded ID book.
| Route 1: eHomeAffairs first | Route 2: Directly at the bank terminal | |
|---|---|---|
| How it starts | Choose “New Application” on eHomeAffairs, complete the form and note your reference number | Use the Smart ID self-service terminal at a selected bank |
| Payment | Pay online; the application shows as “paid” once the payment clears | Fee taken from your bank account or available card limit |
| What you need | Your application reference number | Your current green ID book or existing Smart ID |
| At the branch | Check in at the Home Affairs counter, where your details are confirmed and your biometrics taken | Application goes straight to Home Affairs, with no separate eHomeAffairs login |
| Collection | Same branch, with your current ID or temporary ID and the SMS | |
