Step 1: List your December costs
| Expense | Estimate (R) |
|---|---|
| Groceries and festive food | |
| Gifts | |
| Transport and fuel | |
| Family visits or travel | |
| School fees, uniforms and stationery for January | |
| Total |
Step 2: Compare it with your income
Add up your salary, any bonus and any other income. If your costs are higher, cut costs, not corners on essentials.
Step 3: Save a little each week
Even a small weekly amount adds up. Set the money aside as soon as you get paid, in a separate account or savings pocket.
Ways to spend less
- Set a spending limit per gift, and agree to a family gift limit.
- Buy non-perishable groceries early on special.
- Cook at home instead of eating out.
- Share transport costs on long trips.
- Choose experiences over expensive presents.
Think twice before borrowing
A short-term loan for festive spending can be expensive and hard to repay in January. If you do need credit, only use an NCR-registered lender, read the contract, and check the total cost of credit. Read our guide on how to check whether a lender is registered.
Do not forget January
Keep part of your December money aside for school fees and your first month’s expenses.
